Western Australian Psychotropic Drugs Committee - WAPDC

About WAPDC

WAPDC was established in 1998 with the purpose of providing guidance and advice on the use of psycho-pharmacological agents. Previously, the committee was mainly active in developing and publishing clinical guidelines on the use of psychotropic medicines. These WAPDC publications included treatment guidelines for Anxiety Disorders, Antipsychotics, Antidepressants and Sedation – some in their fourth edition. However, the work of a voluntary committee in maintaining the currency of published guidelines and producing new work became too demanding. After a hiatus, the committee reformed in August 2013 with reduced focus on publishing clinical guidelines.

WAPDC will now focus on providing expert independent advice on psychotropic drugs to the Chief Psychiatrist of WA, as well as providing relevant advice and information to medical practitioners and to WATAG. The committee will monitor use of psychotropic drugs, maintain a watch on new products developed for use in mental health, promote drug safety within mental health services and assist with the management and evaluation of the mental health formulary.
